Date Completed: April 2020

Project Description:

Jose I. Guerra, Inc. was the engineer-of-record for Alliance Children’s Garden. We were in charge of the structural engineering design of the project, including a total of 240-ft long retaining walls and the foundations of various major installations in the park.

The garden is a 2-acre recreational environment within Butler Park. It represents the fulfillment of a multiyear master plan effort to provide Austin citizens with a multi-purpose cultural park. Our office collaborated with the Landscape Architect to develop the curved retaining walls that would become a focal point of the park, with artwork painted on the concrete surfaces. We also worked closely with the Geotechnical Engineer to provide the proper subgrade preparation and backfill requirements to the contractor to ensure the foundations in this sensitive site adjacent to Lady Bird Lake were properly constructed.

Our team provided fast-tracked detailed foundation designs for various musical and art installations in the park during construction phase. Our proactive actions and rapid responses helped to ensure that the construction could proceed with minimal schedule and cost impacts. With our experience in design collaboration with the City of Austin, Architect, other engineering disciplines and the general contractor, Jose I. Guerra, Inc. has added substantial value to the project design and construction processes.
