Emma Long Metro Park – Bathroom Improvements Phase 2 Austin, Texas

Owner: City of Austin
Contact Person: MWM Design Group
Date Completed: May 2022
Construction Cost: $500K
Project Description:

The existing 1250 sf bathhouse buildings were made of limestone walls with precast concrete roof. Our structural team was responsible for designing new steel roof structures, columns and foundation supports to replace the existing concrete roof. Tubular and pipe steel members were designed to support the new cedar tongue-and-groove cedar roof deck and to act as portal frame to provide lateral stability. The roof structures were designed to keep member sizes at a minimum to create a light weight structures that “floated” above the existing limestone walls, and to act as the canopy for an airy pavilion extension.
Throughout the project, the Structural team ensured that we had paid special attention to the Owner’s request to preserve the existing limestone wall structures and the need to provide a constructible structure that can be erected above the existing walls. Jose I. Guerra, Inc. provided innovative design solution to the unique site conditions to add significant value to preserve the historical feature of the existing bathhouses.
