SAWS Tank Rehabilitations – San Antonio, Texas
Evans GST: The Ground Storage Tank is a 5 million gallon (MG) water tank that was evaluated in March of 2021 and a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) was developed for the condition of the tank and the grounds surrounding it. From this report SAWS decided to rehabilitate the tank and site. Later that year our firm was the structural portion of a Team selected to develop the design documents for this rehabilitation. From our extensive experience of this type of work we efficiently compiled a set of drawings that addressed the issues put forth in the PER. Every project has its own unique difficulties. During this project there were plenty of these. At the beginning of the construction portion of the project, it was found that there were valves outside of the tank that were not working so that the tank could not be properly isolated. Without this ability, the rehabilitation could not move forward. The Guerra team quickly developed a set of large plug diaphragms that were welded into the end of a 48” and 60” diameter pipes and the construction remained on schedule. Though the PER indicated that the roof elements in the vapor area needed repair, it wasn’t until there was some spot sandblasting of the roof rafters that the extent of the rafter’s material loss was known. Our team developed a labeling system and categories for the Contractor to use in rehabbing the rafter by either blasting, repairing with plates or replacing the roof rafters entirely. Our Structural team is very experienced in the evaluation and rehabilitation of steel water storage tanks. For more than 15 years we have worked with various municipalities on inspecting their systems. producing reports giving overviews of the condition of the tanks and recommendations for their rehab. This information can be used to develop a schedule to maintain a large system efficiently, reducing the chances of degraded service by unexpected loss of infrastructure.
AMHURST EST: For the Amhurst Tank, the scope included General Maintenance/Rehabilitation of the Elevated Storage Tank including safety improvements. The scope of work included coordination of the design with the needs of the project and provided all the required appurtenances for the Owner’s needs/requirements. Additionally, this projected included elements like ladder types, landing layouts, safety preferences, ladder safety and safety gates, hatch sizes and types, typical misc. items such as drain lines, pass thru connections for tank wash down.
