Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Headworks No. 1 – Austin, Texas
This project addressed repairs, additions, and upgrades to the Headworks 1 Building to improve flow, upgrade technology, and add operational controls. It also included the addition of a new, separate electrical structure, with a roof-to-roof bridge between the two, to provide power for the new equipment being installed. The structural scope of work included: Selective Demolition of various parts of the structure (including walls, penetrations, slabs, and roof) in the existing Headworks building to accommodate new equipment, and higher water levels, the addition of large-diameter connection pipes. Two of the challenges of this project involved working around existing large-diameter Influent pipes that must remain during construction, and application of modern design standards to historic structures. These size and location of these pipes restricted and helped to define the shape of the building additions. A floating slab above a critical large diameter pipe was used to support truck traffic to and from the building. Reconciling the code of record and modern design standards required an in depth knowledge of historic standards as well as the basis of the changes that have occurred so that the intent of the code can be met even when there appears to be conflict in the language.
